Below is a comparison of features…

The competition for the best Android phone in the market is getting hotter. During the next few weeks – and more so by the spring edition of Gitex 2014  - three new phones are scheduled to hit the UAE market.

Samsung unveiled Galaxy S5 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this February and is scheduled to launch retail sales by April 11. Sony unveiled the Xperia Z2 at the WMC and later had a separate event in Dubai to announce its latest models for the Middle East market.

Sony, too, is set to launch its new products including the Xperia Z2 by the second or third week on April. HTC One (M8) that was only launched on Tuesday has already on sale in the US. The Google Play edition is available for $699 and is expected to ship in two to three weeks. The Middle East sales are also expected to start around the second week on April.

While the official pricing for the Galaxy S5 is yet to be announced, an online retailer has already listed the product on sale for Dh2,999 and is offering it at Dh2,699 at 10 per cent discount. In comparison it has priced the HTC One (M8) at Dh3,699 but offering a 9 per cent discount for Dh3,399. The Google play edition of HTC One is priced at $699. Sony is yet to reveal its pricing for the Xperia Z2.

The Spring edition of Gitex will especially throw up an interesting competition between the three new models and lay emphasis on the marketing strategy these brands adopt.

Here is a comparison of features between the Galaxy S5, The Xperia Z2 and  the New HTC One (M8).

Design and Size

Galaxy S5

It was widely expected that Samsung would this time around go in for an improved metal case. But that was not to be. The Samsung Galaxy S5 has marginally increased the display size to 5.1” HD super Amoled display with 1080 pixels resolution. But it retains the same old plastic design. From the front both the S4 and the S5 looks almost the same. The bezel on the side has gone slightly slimmer.

Portable gym? Gadget that churns your muscles for Dh327

The wearable device is connected to the smartphone through an app.

In what could be a dream come true to many men and women who cannot afford to spend enough time at the gym, a new device that has been listed on the crowd-funding website Indigogo just does that.

Smartmio, as the device is known, is no more about reading your steps or suggesting the ideal workout for you. It is a device that will do the task for you - it stimulates your muscles.

The wearable device is connected to your smartphone through an app and enables you to stimulate your muscles even as you sit in front of your computer working in the office.

The device, however, only complements your physical workout and will not be able to completely replace it. Also, you should never use the device while driving or while doing a physical activity.

The light-weight gadget (measuring about 25 grams) is a combination of two electrodes that stick to your skin along with a Bluetooth connector and supports both the iOS and Android OS.

SmartMio uses the process commonly known as Electrical Muscle Stimulation, or EMS (also called Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation or NEMS). EMS – which has been scientifically proven to boost sports performance, trains muscle groups in complete isolation, which promoters say is not easily achieved through regular training.

SmartMio comes with a host of preset programmes for different workout needs aimed at athletes and sports enthusiasts of any level.

According to developers, the device can significantly improve your overall sports performance in six to eight weeks; develop extra endurance; build resistance; strength and speed for 14 main muscle groups; recover your muscles in a more efficient way as well as complement your regular workouts in a safe and comfortable manner.

Alex Pisarev is the CEO and founder of the project.

SmartMio is already available for pre-orders on Indeigogo at a starting price of $89 [Dh327] and is scheduled to ship to the US and European markets later this year.

Five months to go for big switch to energy saving bulbs

UAE households will no longer use low-cost incandescent bulbs.

In a bid to step up on energy conservation and reduce the carbon footprint, switching over to energy saving bulbs go a long way, highlighted experts on the side-line of Dubai's participation in the global environmental initiative Earth Hour.

Despite, these bulbs costing much more than incandescent bulbs, experts claimed that in the long run, it would translate into annual savings of around Dh2,300 in a normal household.

As per the new standardisation guideline for indoor lighting set by Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology (Esma), all inefficient, low-cost bulbs are currently being phased out in local stores. They are expected to be cleared from the shelves by the end of the year.

Residents will then be able to buy only energy-efficient bulbs.

Even though Esma has marked July 1 as the deadline for the swap, experts informed that the change will be gradual.

"It will depend on how long the light bulbs currently being used are lasting. Currently, we are encouraging people to make a swap," stated Ida Tillisch, director general Emirates Wildlife Society in association with WWF.

Although incandescent bulbs might appear economical for many, in the long-run it will only translate into huge energy bills.

Ida admitted that energy-saving bulbs will be an expense upfront, but it could last for much longer.

"As per our calculations this would reduce 940,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, which is equivalent to taking 165,000 cars off the road.

"It will eventually translate into huge savings for the household, and the government as well because it is subsidized energy with more efficiency.

"In fact, the payback time for a resident is a year."

According to the experts, this shift is expected to bring in a savings of Dh668 million a year.

Ida added that Esma "will also increase the standard for energy-efficient bulbs".

"You have energy bulbs that are manufactured around the world that are not in line with the standards implemented here in the UAE, but that will be checked."

According to officials at Esma, after the switch in households, they will look into street lights in the second phase, and big stadiums in the third stage.

Weibo to raise $500 million with US stock offering

Move will allow spin off from the Internet giant Sina.

Weibo, the Chinese microblogging service often compared with Twitter, filed Friday for a US stock offering seeking to raise $500 million.

The move will allow the popular Chinese-language social network to spin off from the Internet giant Sina, according to documents filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

The filing said Weibo had 129.1 million monthly active users in December and 61.4 million average daily active users.

"A microcosm of Chinese society, Weibo has attracted a wide range of users, including ordinary people, celebrities and other public figures, as well as organizations such as media outlets, businesses, government agencies and charities," the SEC filing said.

"Weibo has become a cultural phenomenon in China.

"Weibo allows people to be heard publicly and exposed to the rich ideas, cultures and experiences of the broader world," it added.

"Media outlets use Weibo as a source of news and a distribution channel for their headline news. Government agencies and officials use Weibo as an official communication channel for disseminating timely information and gauging public opinion to improve public services."

Sever from Sina

The filing said Weibo's initial public offering (IPO) will be part of a "carve-out from Sina" but that Sina would "continue to provide us with certain support services" after it becomes independent.

Weibo reported revenues for 2013 of $188 million, triple the level of 2012, but has continually lost money, like its US counterpart, with accumulated losses of $274.9 million as of December 31.

But Weibo said it would work to increase the number of users and monetization as it strives for profitability.

The company did not indicate whether Weibo would file its IPO on the Nasdaq or New York Stock Exchange.

The lead underwriters will be Goldman Sachs Asia and Credit Suisse.

China's Twitter

Twitter's high-flying Wall Street debut in November drew attention to the growing power of social media, but it also raised concerns about a potential bubble in the sector.

The microblogging service's shares soared after debuting at $26 in the initial public offering but dropped the following day to slightly more than $40.

At the close of trading on the New York Stock Exchange, Twitter shares stood at $51.92.

Twitter has fast become ingrained in popular culture but must still convince investors of its business model.

The first earnings report since Twitter's vaunted public offering delivered a cold dose of reality for the company.

The results showed revenues in the quarter that ended December 31 doubled from a year ago to a better-than-expected $242.6 million.

But the number of worldwide users was up just nine million from the figure of 232 million when Twitter went public in November, suggesting only modest growth at a time when investors were looking for a surge.

Twitter said the loss for the year widened to $645 million from $79 million in 2012, even as revenues more than doubled to $664 million for the full year.

The company, which has its roots in 140-character text messages, plans to get more visually engaging with pictures and video.
